2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Management Transition Follows Poor Response
The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at the development studio following the departure of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last autumn.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer updated employees about this strategic move through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a clearer vision.
Ismailer noted that the team is now overhauling the project with a refreshed vision, aiming to address player expectations.
Trend of Strategic Hires
This announcement follows a comparable action taken by the publisher in August, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the entire content from Ismailer's announcement:
Team—
I understand you all just completed your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most driven and creative developers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re eager for that relationship to persist.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last autumn’s the game testing phase was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the requirement for a more distinct identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the input to mind and revamped the title with a refreshed goal - one that’s positioned to achieve its potential to our fans.
The belief in this project strengthens every day. To boost the outstanding advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of 31st Union. Following some time of conversations, Ben officially joins us on next week.
Ben’s leadership and expertise in the competitive gaming genre is vast, having spent the past decade and a half creating and overseeing some of the most well-known franchises in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in welcoming him soon. We are all looking forward to keep witnessing the evolution of the game in the time to follow.
David
Experience of the Incoming Leader
The appointee presently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He earlier was employed at major gaming companies in various development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Game Information and Vision
Project Ethos was unveiled in October 2024 alongside a public demo. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the description states. "Take on the opponents with new abilities, risks, and tests that shift every match. Do you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Or aim high, gamble everything, and pray your group can achieve the highest spot? The option is in your hands."
Project Ethos has not yet received an official debut schedule or supported systems, but enthusiasts can anticipate additional details as development advances.
