Approximately 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Officers report they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.
Police then discovered many other smeared cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement say initial examinations show the fluid was likely human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its source; officials are currently not aware of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials said they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the community for details.
A senior representative stated the incident made him stunned and required to be addressed promptly.
"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a shooter aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
